Garland, Cuddyer Lead Rockies to 6-3 Victory Over Padres

cuddyer cargo rockiesIt’s become about as good of a start to the season the Rockies and the fans could’ve imagined. And it has started with their starting pitching. In four of the first five games, the Rockies starters have gone at least 6 solid innings, with veteran John Garland continuing the success in Colorado’s 6-3 victory over San Diego.

The No. 1 one worry going into the 2013 season for the Colorado Rockies, was in fact the starting pitching. With Jeff Francis the “ace” towards the end of the regular season for the Mile High squad, the Rockies looked to be in quite a good place with J-Fran acting as the No. 4 guy heading into this year.

So things had to get better with Francis being put under three other guys. The one guy who is stuck under Francis as the No. 5 guy, is Jon Garland.

Headed into the 2013 season, Garland had not pitched in the majors since June 2011, and many were skeptical as to how he would perform with so much time away from the big leagues.

But on Saturday, Garland performed just fine in his first outing, going 6 solid innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 75 pitches to earn the victory. Garland had help from the Rockies bats, as Cuddyer led the offense, going 3-4, and finishing with a game-high 4 RBI. With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Cargo, Tulo, and then Cuddyer lined together some bloop-esque singles to take the 4-1 lead and Colorado hung on.

The Rockies start the season 4-1 and look for the series sweep on Sunday against the Padres, and they’ll send “ace” Jhoulys Chacin to face off against San Diego’s Edinson Volquez.
