According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Denver Broncos have reached a 1-year deal with former Chargers Linebacker Shaun Phillips.

The addition of Phillips to the Broncos comes mere minutes after Denver selects defensive end Quanterus Smith out of Western Kentucky with the 146th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
The addition of Quanterus and now Shaun Phillips to the Broncos defense will continue to fill the hole that was left void with the loss of Elvis Dumervil post-WTFax Gate and his signing with the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.
In 2012, Shaun Phillips totaled 9.5 sacks, and one of those was indeed on current Broncos QB Peyton Manning. Phillips has spent his entire 9-year career with the AFC West rival Chargers.
While Shaun Phillips isn’t considered one of the elite pass rushers in the league today, he did make the Pro Bowl in 2010 as a replacement to James Harrison. And Shaun Phillips likely makes the most sense as he is as much of a one-trick pony as Elvis was, and similar to Dumervil, that “one trick” is getting to the quarterback. Not quite sure if this means the end for the Broncos pursuit of Dwight Freeney or John Abraham, but this addition is better than nothing.
Phillips will likely compete with Robert Ayers which adds depth to the defense. Great pick up in my estimation, especially to a pass-rush that already features the popular Von Miller.
