What’s the True Value of Kevin Durant?

kevin durantKevin Durant won the MVP of the regular season award for 2013 – 2014 but he, as well as everyone around the NBA, deeply knows that that’s not enough. Unless KD wins his first championship ring, any other title won’t be enough.

The good news is that Durant currently plays for a team with lots of potential to make it to the top this year. The bad news, though, is that OKC will continue playing the rest of the playoffs without its starting power forward Serge Ibaka and that loss might have a huge impact on Durant’s chances to win his first ring.

So what’s the true value of Kevin Durant? Can he be the one to blame for Oklahoma City’s failure to make it to the top over the last few seasons? Is Durant good enough to dethrone LeBron James from the top of the list when it comes to best basketball players currently active in the NBA?

We all know how good of a player Kevin Durant is. He is the only one that can be compared to LeBron James at the moment and he is only 25 years old. The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the 2013 – 2014 campaign as one of the favorites to win the title and Kevin Durant just made that look even more probable thanks to his monster performances over the course of the season. OKC still has some good chances to be the one to win the Larry O’Brien trophy this year, but the San Antonio Spurs have taken their performance to a whole other level. Although it won’t be impossible, it will certainly very difficult for the Thunder to eliminate Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and their company this year, especially now that they will be playing without Serge Ibaka.

In fact, the Thunder have been anything but lucky over the last couple of seasons. After making it to the NBA Finals in 2012 only to fall to LeBron James and the Miami Heat after just five games, the Thunder had to play without Durant’s fellow superstar, Russell Westbrook, during the 2013 playoffs. Now, the absence of Serge Ibaka may haunt their championship course for yet another year. Nonetheless, there is no question about Durant’s quality as a player and of course, he will not be the one to blame if the Thunder don’t win the championship.

On the contrary, Durant has been doing whatever passes from his hand to place OKC in a position to win. He is hitting his shots, he is rebounding and dishing assists, he is playing defense as well as he can. It’s true that the Thunder heavily rely on their two superstars and that might be something Scott Brooks will have to rethink if the Thunder fail to make it to the top this season.

But when it comes to Kevin Durant and his value as a player, it wouldn’t be a surprise if KD goes on to win the MVP award for the upcoming season, too, and the one after. At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be a player in the league with better potential than him.
