We are almost a week into the 2014 NBA Playoffs and we have already seen a bunch of surprises. Only two of the teams which entered the first round of the postseason with a home court advantage, the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami heat, continue to hold it. We’ve already seen some underdogs making their presence felt and we can say that we are anything but certain about which the teams which will get the ticket to the next round will be. Let’s see who is winning, who is losing at the moment in either conference.
The Miami Heat are definitely winning at the start of the postseason. LeBron James and Co. smashed the Charlotte Bobcats, taking a 1 – 0 advantage. On top of that, the Cats’ leader, big man Al Jefferson got hurt and his ability to play at his 100 percent is now questionable. If there was one chance for Charlotte to get a few victories against Miami, now they are almost vanished.
The Brooklyn Nets are also winners up to now. Although the Nets lost Game 2, they have now shown that they are fairly considered as one of the strongest underdogs in the entire NBA.
On the contrary, the Chicago Bulls are the big losers up to now. They entered the first round as the favorites against the Washington Wizards but they have now lost both games at home. The series will now be taken to Washington, where it will be very difficult for Chicago to turn things around.
The Los Angeles Clippers can also be characterized as winners. Whilst the Golden State Warriors broke the Clips’ home court advantage, winning a thriller in Game 1, the Clips responded with a 40 – point margin victory in Game 2. Lob City is still considered to be the best of the two teams of this matchup. If the Clips stick to their habits and if Blake Griffin continues to play well, LA should close out this series sooner than later.
The Memphis Grizzlies are also winners. Winning a game against the red hot Oklahoma City Thunder is an achievement, especially when it is Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs. Apart from their success to break OKC’s home court advantage, the Grizzlies showed that they are capable of topping the Thunder. Could Memphis surprise the league and make it to the conference finals for a second year in a row?
The San Antonio Spurs did their job and won Game 1 against the Dallas Mavericks. The entire 2013 – 2014 season has been all about efficiency and getting the desired result for the Spurs so they can fairly be considered as winners. The Spurs have been one of the most consistent teams in the league, if not the most consistent one. They continue to be one of the top favorites for the title in the West.
The Houston Rockets, on the other hand are losing ground. They fell to the Portland Trail Blazers at home during the first game. If they don’t get Game 2, it will be almost impossible for them to earn the ticket to the conference semis.
