No Hope For These Sorry Rockies

With the Broncos starting their 2014 season on Sunday night, it’s important to note the Rockies are still playing Major League Baseball this month. They have 22 games to go until their nightmarish season is over.

The Rockies played their 140th game of the season yesterday afternoon, and lo and behold, the Rockies actually won the game. It was a 9-2 blowout victory over the Giants at Coors Field. No word whether or not Rockies manager Walt Weiss took his players out for ice cream after the win.

The Rockies have become yesterday’s news again after another horrible season. They became irrelevant after the Rockies’ 9-0 loss to the Dodgers on July 4.  The Rockies were hit around by the NL West leaders in that game, not to mention so many baserunning blunders.

While I haven’t watched a Rockies game for the last two months, diehard Rockies fans make it a point to still watch. To them, it’s baseball. To them, it’s entertainment.  Plus, there’s nothing like having a good time at the Coors Field’s Party Deck. Good for them. They are fans that are loyal to their team, and they should be commended for it.

For me, it’s hard to watch a baseball team that has no interest in winning. This is a team that is never accountable for fielding a bad product year after year. This is a team that has created a culture of losing by making excuses such as citing injuries or saying it’s hard to pitch at Coors Field. This is a team that focuses on making profits rather than providing a winning product.

It looks like no one is going to be fired after the season is over from all accounts. The Rockies are not losing 100 games, and even if they did, it was hard to believe Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd, Rockies assistant general manager Bill Geivett and Weiss were going to be fired.

One would think the Rockies would clean house after two bad seasons in a row. No one stays on at a job in Major League Baseball after so many bad years. The Rockies think differently. It makes one envious about O’Dowd, Geivett and Weiss staying on despite being incompetent. I can only wish I worked for the Rockies and be this bad.

By keeping this management team, there’s no reason to be excited about the Rockies next year. It will be more of the same. More losing. More excuses. More incidents with  Rockies owner Dick Monfort and the fans. More unwatchable baseball. YAY!

Monfort does not have the stomach to fire his general manager or manager. He is not interested in doing a search of getting a new general manager. He openly admitted he does not know much about baseball, and he does not know much about anyone that works for Major League Baseball teams. That’s all Rockies fans need to know.

Monfort is not an owner that lives with wins and losses despite what people think. If he was that upset, he would have made changes long time ago. As long as he is making money, he is happy. With no one focusing on the Rockies now, he is enjoying all this since he does not escape criticism.

This Rockies team is so boring to watch. Outside of Jorge De La Rosa, Tyler Matzek, Corey Dickerson, Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez, what’s there to watch? These guys just go through the motions for three hours and then eat their spread. These guys don’t get worked up about losing. That itself is a problem.

If losing isn’t bad enough, the Rockies have themselves a problem with two of their stars being hurt every year in Gonzalez and Tulowitzki. It happened again this year. This has gone on for the last few years. Bank on them being hurt again next year. It’s no wonder why the Rockies want to trade either or both of them, so that they would avoid paying them for being on the disabled list.

Problem with trading Tulowitzki and Gonzalez is teams know they are injury-prone. They are not giving up prospects or their best players to get either of them. The Rockies are stuck with them no matter what.

So the Rockies will keep their management team. They can’t trade their stars. There’s no end in sight for this sorry baseball team. There you have it. Good times, eh.

At least, the Rockies signed De La Rosa to a two-year extension yesterday. He is not enough to save the Rockies, though. That has been evident the last two years.

Next few seasons might as well be wash, rinse and repeat.

Why get excited about this sorry team for the next few years?

Why even care when Monfort doesn’t care?
