George Karl Out In Denver

NBA: Portland Trail Blazers at Denver NuggetsAccording to Yahoo! Sports, the Nuggets will not bring back 2012-12 Coach of the Year George Karl after nine seasons. This comes six days after  2012-13 Executive of the Year Masai Ujiri left town to become the new Head of Basketball Operations for the Toronto Raptors.
First off, wow. Back in the beginning of May when I wrote a column stating how the Nuggets should part ways with the legendary coach, I knew it wouldn’t happen. After winning Coach of the Year, I was sure of it. Coming only days after the Nuggets let Masai walk, I can only imagine that Karl wanted out. With only one year left on his contract, Karl likely wouldn’t have gotten a high-end career ending contract after the 2013-14 season.

Karl reportedly wanted to extend his deal with Denver, but the Nuggets denied his request, according to Yahoo! Sports. In the last year of his deal, it was all in flux once Masai was out.

The Los Angeles Clippers had initial conversations about their interest in George Karl, but had not asked for permission to talk with the coach.

Twitter has already exploded on the matter. Kenneth Faried joined in by saying “So we lost a GM now a coach what’s next!?”

Karl won’t last long on the market.
